Girl Scouts from each grade level have one official uniform item a sash, vest, or tunic to display badges, pins, awards, and other insignia.

This item is required when you participate in ceremonies or officially represent Girl Scouts. You can wear your sash, vest, or tunic over official Girl Scout gear or over a white shirt and khaki pants or skirt. Or, if not, the pin would go below Brownie Wings, if the girl has those. If the girl does not have Brownie Wings, you can place the pin below the membership stars, or if no stars, below the troop numerals. Basically, it goes below all the other insignia, and above earned badges.

Placement of the cookie pin is similar, on the Brownie vest or Cadette vest. It will go below all the insignia, and above any badges earned. Note, some scouts will place the cookie pin at the same level as My Promise, My Faith pins, and it is their choice to do so if they wish!

You can generally tell the program level by the shape of the badges: Junior skill-builder badges are round and Cadette skill-builder badges are diamond-shaped. Journey badges, though, may have size and shape variations, but you can see what they look like in the Journey books.

Certain awards like bridging arches and Brownie wings, however, do move to the next level vest. Question: I am assuming "Inspire Imagine Innovate! I just wanted to be sure before ironing them on.

Answer: Yes! Thanks for your question and for supporting your Girl Scout! Answer: Early Bird is a patch given for early registration. Since this is earned, it goes on the front of the vest or sash. You can place them in a row just above any other earned badges, or just above other earned badges. The World Thinking Day award should not be confused with general World Thinking Day fun patches, which are different in size and shape than Girl Scouts badges, and should go on the back of the vest or sash.

Answer: These patches are associated with the cookie program, and are considered fun patches, so they go anywhere on the back of the vest or sash. Answer: Cookie badges and patches are always a source of some confusion.

There are actual earned badges for cookie sales, like the Junior level Cookie CEO badge, but probably you are referring to a patch given to a Girl Scout for doing a site sale, or participating in a similar cookie event? If the patch is not shaped like other skill-builder badges, for example: triangular for Brownie badges, or circular for Juniors, then it is likely a fun patch.

All fun patches go on the back of the vest or sash. If it is a skill-builder badge, it will go on the front of the vest, on the girl's right side, with placement starting at the hemline and working up. If there is no more room, it is perfectly fine to place the badge on the back.

One other possibility: if the girl is a Daisy, and the patch looks like a green leaf and says "Count it Up" or "Talk it Up", then it goes on the front of the vest, below the petals, so that it forms the girl's left-side leaves of the daisy's stem.

The Cooie Activity pin also is an earned award and goes on the front of the vest or sash. Answer: The rededication or Investiture patch goes anywhere on the back of the sash or vest.

Most Scouts will place patches starting at the top edge of the sash or vest and work downward. If you discover that what you have is an earned Council badge, please write back and let us know!

Answer: Both of these are considered fun patches, and so will go on the back of the vest or sash. Question: Does it matter if Daisy Journey badges are placed on the bottom left or right? When they run out of room on the bottom left, they will fill up the bottom right. If you still run out of room, you can add another row above, again going from left to right.

If by chance you earn skill-builder badges, you can place these in a row above the Journey badges on the left, OR in a row on the right. No worries, though, the important thing is that the badges were earned and a girl should rightfully feel proud to wear them! Answer: Thanks for your excellent question! Question: Where does the triangle "play fair" patch go on a Girl Scout's sash? Since it is an earned badge, it goes on the front of the sash, below all the usual insignia, and below Journey badges. If you haven't yet earned any Journey badges, but plan to, leave some space below insignia for the Journey badges, and start placing Try-its below that space.

Alternatively, you can start placing Try-its along the bottom hemline of the sash, and work your way up. If you've run out of room on the sash for Try-its, it is okay to place some on the back of the sash! Question: If we get our cookie sale and cookie booth patches after we bridge from Brownies to Juniors, can we place them on the junior vest?

Answer: I am going to assume that this is the Brownie level Making Friends try-it badge, which is triangular in shape with a brown edge and has a cat and mouse design in the center. If so, then this is an earned badge, so it goes on the front of the vest, on the girl's right side. Badges are generally started on the hemline, lined up in a row. Move up, row by row, as you add additional badges. If you run out of room on the right side, you can place some on the left side, again starting at the hemline and moving up.

For sashes, place the badge on the front, starting at the bottom and working up, row by row. If your Making Friends patch does not match the description of the Brownie badge, then perhaps it is a fun patch? Most Making Friends fun patches have the words "Making Friends" on it. If that is the case, then as a fun patch, it would be placed anywhere on the back of the vest or sash.
