When it does this it seams like if you have the system loaded down using a lot of resources, it will change the file icons. You may look at your files and they will have a picture that you have been working on as the icon or sometimes it will change the html icons to the notepad icon, Does that help any.
If you install any new programs it will over write the registry to say that the file belongs to a new program, and that means that the icon will change on the file type.
Some programs, when they load, including Internet explorer which likes to own those particular file types willpop up a message box asking if you want the program to be the default for a particular file type.
If you say yes it will change the file type associations. Then you open the other program which will ask you exactly the same thing and change them back. You're not using IE and Netscape are you? Click Apply and the icon will alternate. To exchange icons for folders and information, navigate to either one and right-click it. Select Properties from the context menu. On the Properties window, choose the Customize tab. Click the Change Icon button after which choose the Windows 98 folder icon that you wish to have to use for it.
Click Apply. Repeat this for recordsdata and all other pieces that you wish to have to alternate the icon for.
